Free photos By Janice Hostager

Research indicates the human brain can process images much faster than text–in 13 milliseconds! So why not use photos–instead of text–every chance you get!

But custom photography can be very expensive.  Enter stock photography and free image sites.  It’s a perfect way to get a free images for your website, blog or your marketing needs.

But there is one thing you should know about before jumping into stock photography: terms of use. Although I am not an lawyer nor am I qualified to give legal advice, I do know that a business can get into a big financial mess (read:lawsuit) by violating copyright law. And copyright should always be assumed, since it’s given to all creative work.  So it’s a very good idea to check out the terms of use for each photo or site before using any photo. Here is a quick primer of image rights and fair use, which you should be acquainted with if you are going to use stock photography.

Free Image Sites

 Free Images

Free photo sites The first site I visit. Lots of varied content (formally Stockxchg.com).  The photo restrictions vary for each photo, so make sure to check before downloading.

 RGB Stock

A nice selection of photos. Again, check the terms for each before downloading.

 Morgue File

Free image sites

Years ago, when artists wanted to sketch something, they started by looking through a file of photos, referred to a photo morgue. That is the concept behind this site. Although photos are free for use, they state this: “The Morguefile license is specifically for designers and illustrators to use the images in a creative process creating work of their own. If you would like to use the image in a blog post, we recommend contacting the photographer and providing a by line under the photo with the photographer’s name. This is generally agreed to be acceptable.” Beautiful photos, however, and I still recommend them.

 Flickr

Free image sites

Lots of photos, some will allow Creative Commons attribution but many are copyrighted, so please ask for permission.

 Creative Commons Search Engine

This will allow you to search for Creative Commons attribution among several sites, but cautions you to check each photo for any restrictions.

Every Stock Photo

 Pixabay

 Public Domain Pictures

free image sites

These photos are in the public domain, but if you ” use an image you find here for commercial use, please be aware that some photos do require a model or property release. Pictures featuring products should be used with care.”

Recommended Paid Sites

Dreamstime

Free images

Although their entire site isn’t free, they do have a section of free photos and reasonably price paid photos.  It is the site I use most often, and they don’t require a subscription.

 123rf

free image sites

Although primarily a paid site, I use them often and recommend them. They offer a selection of free images too.

 Graphic Leftovers Stock Images

free image sites

This site is not free, but they have a nice selection of photos that start at $1 each.

Enjoy the photos and use them often! And spread the word!
